@WELCOME TO DARK PORTAL
Greetings fellow mortal.
You now have in your possession a great deal of time, effort, work
and development - a collection of short stories that span a year and
a bit. This program has been designed for the presentation of those
stories. I hope you like it (you'd better do sucker).
Okay - before I go on, may I first suggest that you feast your eyes
on the Help Screen - a simple press of the character "H" will take you
there (you must be in the main menu, please note). Dark Portal may be
operated via the mouse or the keyboard, or indeed, a mixture of both.
To scroll this text, simply move the mouse pointer into the lower
half of the screen. This will cause the text to scroll. Alternatively,
press the "down" arrow key - this will have the same effect.
I must declare at this point that Dark Portal was created using an
Amiga 1200. Older A500 users will notice that this text scrolls quite
jerkily when done with the mouse - it's lack of speed in your computer
I'm afraid. Sorry about that. At least it works though, eh?
Although most of these commands are displayed on the Help Screen,
here is a complete list for you, just for easy reference...

? WHAT YOU WILL FIND IN DARK PORTAL
If you have not already guessed from reading the title of this
production, the main written content is of the "horror" class-
-ification. This does not mean that every story is bursting at the
seams with blood, intestines, torture and mutilation, but it does mean
most of them are quite creepy.
I have split the "main menu" up into four parts - (1) INTRODUCTION,
which includes the welcome text you are reading now, some blurb for
each of the stories and one or two bits of information regarding new
Black Dragon/Quatermass Experiment productions. (2) NIGHTMARES, a
collection of stories that, although they may contain some gore, are
basically just entertaining and suitable for almost anyone to read.
(3) BEYOND TERROR, stories that might not be everybodies cup of tea.
They may contain bad language in their dialogue and include scenes of
sex/violence. Read the "Warnings" text for more information on the
content of these stories. Lastly, (4) BACK END consists of a few
pictures and options, including toggle the music on/off.
Every story uses the same friendly text-reader program (you are using
it right now). You will not find any book-sized documents, just nice,
short stories, the longest of which can easily be read within about
half an hour. Dark Portal can not print stories, I'm afraid.
? WHY IS DARK PORTAL HERE?
As someone who writes for pleasure, not profit (I've never made a
single penny out of any of my stories), I decided a long time ago that
an easy-to-use PD disk would be an excellent way to distribute all my
best, unpublished work. PD software has many advantages - you can code
anything you want, and as long as it's decently presented, fun and
interesting, there should be no problems selling at least a dozen
copies through the libraries.
The stories here are in my own style, that's another reason Dark
Portal is in your hands right now. I've been writing for a great deal
of time, and my techniques and ideas have changed and developed (I
hope for the better. I have dated each piece of work at the top, just
so you can get an idea of the time-span this collection covers).
Some of the stories here are voices for abused children: as a child I
witnessed the terrible effects of sexual abuse slowly destroy a girl I
cared very much for. "Freedom's Edge" and "Bestial Influx" are my
cries for help on her behalf. Please write to me if you have any feed-
back you can give me on these stories. If I ever become a successful
writer (hey, I can dream can't I?) my aim is - ultimately - to scream
out to the world to LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENING behind closed doors.
? WHAT'S THIS "TQE" THINGY THEN?
TQE stands for "The Quatermass Experiment" and is plugged very
shamelessly indeed throughout Dark Portal. It's actually the name of
an excellent disk-magazine, and the title of the group who coded it.
For more information on this top-class production, read the "Future"
text, and have a peek at the advertisement, found in the "BACK END"
section of Dark Portal. Also, you can read the most excellect story
"About Turn" by Dr Roney (Neale Grant) of the Quatermass Experiment.
He also wrote the rather spiffing tale of "The Hut" featured in this
edition of DP.
